5 Things to Know About the Graphic
Design Scene
The creative field can be a fun place. However fun it is, the graphic design scene is a creative but serious craft. In order to stay on top of your sh*t, you have to take your craft seriously. Here are 5 basic things you can do to get you started:
1. RESEARCH THE FIELD
Don’t be afraid to buy books and search the internet to get some pointers and inspiration. Read forums, visit different graphic design websites, even talk to some seasoned designers and ask them how they manage to keep on top of their creative game.
2. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRATICE
The graphic design scene is a highly competitive one, so if you want to see success in your future, you have to practice your skills and don’t be afraid to learn new ones. There are a lot of freakishly talented designers out there, and believe me they got that way by practicing their craft.
3. LEARN THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THINGS
If you don’t want to get taken advangtage of, your best bet is to start learning how the administer. Learning about contracts are essential in this field. Understanding the business side of graphic design will give you an advantage to where you can eventually go into business yourself as a successful freelancer.
4. PAY SOME DUES
If you want to learn about design in the real world, you should take on an internship to get a feel of it and experience the inner workings. It’ll help you decide if this is the right field for you.
5. GO TO SCHOOL GET SOME TRAINING
Maybe this should have been number 1 or 2, but getting professionally trained at an art school is the most essential part of design. Element just don’t randomly land in the layout, they are strategically placed there for a reason of visual communication. In order to understand visual communication, school is your best bet. Plus most clients and firms take you seriously when you have a degree.
